Les premiers retours sont en tout cas dithyrambiques, avec beaucoup de lecteurs qui le classent parmi les meilleurs roman de l'auteur à côté des Lions d'Al-Rassan, de la Mosaïque de Sarance ou des Chevaux Célestes. Ça donne très envie !

Et que dire sinon que j'ai adoré !
Une qualité bien supérieure au précédent Kay mais avec quelque défaut quand même...
Un véritable auto-hommage avec pas mal de clins d'œils aux autre bouquins de Kay (Children of Earth and sky particulièrement, mais aussi la mosaïque de Sarance ou même les Lions d'Al-Rassan !).
On retrouve tout les ingrédients d'un bon Kay mais il faut avouer avec un petit sentiment de déjà-vu comme diraient les anglais ! ;)

Ce tome m'a donné très envie de relire le précédent "Children of earth and sky" qui m'avait un tout petit peu laissé sur ma faim. C'est plutôt bon signe :D

A Brightness long ago se passe une bonne 20aine d'années plus tôt ce qui permet de très nombreuses références. J'aurai du mal à faire une critique détaillée et originale (Aka fera ca très bien !). On retrouve dans ce roman tous les bons points habituels de Kay : une période historique passionnante (l'italie des Condotierres), une superbe plume, des émotions fortes et des personnages principaux et secondaires (voire très passagers) toujours aussi justes et réussis.

Seuls bémols pour ma part : un romain un peu plus court que d'habitude (donc beaucoup trop court) alors que les intrigues entre les différentes cités états, la papauté et les armées de mercenaires auraient pu être beaucoup plus nombreuses. Le duo charismatique Folco / Monticola m'a également trop fait penser au duo de Al Rassan Belmonte / Ammar sans réussir à arriver à la même réussite. Pour moi ce roman n’atteint tout de même pas le niveau de Al Rassan et Sarance.

Pour finir sur une note 100% positive, j'ai adoré les multiples références à son tome précédent mais aussi à Al Rassan et surtout Sarance. Passage marquant : une course de chevaux de ce nouveau tome, presque aussi parfaite que la course de char de Sarance!
