Mazette !

The most wonderful fantasy I've ever read, 16 October, 2001 Reviewer: A reader from Richmond, Surrey I became so caught up in the quest for the Lightstone, so close to the characters, awed by the landscapes and entranced by the peoples of Ea, I was wrapped around with magic -- the ultimate magic of seeing oneself whole, accepting the potential of being. This is what the hero Val shows us, and it's glorious. The narrative voice seems intimate at first, but it's deceptively so -- in fact it's mythical. I had the sense as I read towards the end that I was following the unfolding of our own true human story, of our connection with the earth and with the stars, and our fall, and the voice became timeless, saturated with meaning. I was utterly gripped and beyond that transfigured. Even Tolkien didn't do that! 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful: One of the best modern works of fantasy ever...., 9 October, 2001 Reviewer: A reader from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada The Lightstone is one of the finest epic stories I've ever read. The characters are strong and distinctive as they are in Zindell's other works; there are lovely touches of humour throughout, and the emotional range of the book is as great as the landscape the action inhabits. I only wish I hadn't read it so quickly as I now have to wait to see what happens next in the wonderful world that Zindell has crafted. If I could give it more than 5 stars I would! 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful: Great Epic, the finest Zindell yet, 7 October, 2001 Reviewer: (markusm@mainconcept.de) from Germany For me there are only two works of true fantasy, those from Tolkien and this new epic from Zindell. All Zindell books have something magical, innocent, magnificent. They have this extra special magic which separates them from the rest of the crop. I can barely wait for the remaining books of this epic. David, go ahead and be the new Tolkien of our generation. Thanks for your work! 4 of 4 people found the following review helpful: One of the best epic fantasies I've ever read, 21 September, 2001 Reviewer: A reader from London The Lightstone is quite simply one of the finest epics I've ever read: grand in scale and style and theme, beautifully written and building to a phenomenal finale. If you love high fantasy like Tolkien's Lord of the Rings and Silmarillion, and you like to delve into the world's myths and legends, then the combination of sweeping cosmology and world-building and the glorious romance of the grail-style quest that Zindell brings to The Lightstone will strike many resonant chords for you. His characters are strong and distinctive; there are lovely touches of humour throughout, and the emotional range of the book is as grand as the landscape the action inhabits. I can't recommend it highly enough...
