It also refers obliquely to the continuing conflict between magic and science. Hope that’s all right.

Not that I haven’t been asked to do it over and over and not that I haven’t thought about it from time to time. But I adopted a hands-off policy early on in my writing career when it came to Shannara. I didn’t what a definitive vocabulary to facilitate pronunciation. I wanted readers to adopt their own way of saying names, which I think makes a book more personal to each reader. That’s why you never get a comprehensive description of characters and creatures. I want you to imagine them. I want you to be part of the process. If I put out a guide, it removes that element of the reading of the books. Admittedly, in retrospect, I probably should have done something about “Shannara”, which no one has pronounced the way I do since the very beginning. I just thought everyone would say it like I do – SHAN-NA-RA. Isn’t it obvious? Guess not. My mistake, but I still think I will leave the creation of a comprehensive vocabulary for another time and place.

J'ai lu ce cycle et je dois avouer que j'ai aimé, mais sans plus. Si effectivement, l'auteur ne peut renier Tolkien, l'histoire reste tout de même plaisante et rythmée, avec des scènes de combats pas mal tournées, des personnages, qui, s'ils sont stéréotypés, sont tout de même vraiment sympas. Ce qui est un peu regrettable, c'est la facilité avec laquelle les héros résolvent les problèmes, on aurait quand même imaginé quelque chose de beaucoup plus ardu, ce qui aurait donné de l'ampleur à l'histoire et un peu plus de plaisir à la lecture. A lire pour ceux et celles qui ne connaissent pas encore, car c'est tout de même une bonne saga, même si elle date un peu. Que devrait-on dire alors du Seigneur des Anneaux, écrit dans les années 50 et qui continue à ravir tant de lecteurs ? Je passerai bien-sûr sur ceux qui prétendent que cette saga ne vaut rien parce qu'il y a trop de descriptions etc. Quand vous penserez avoir créé un monde de l'ampleur de celui de Tolkien, on verra si les descriptions ne sont pas nécessaires...

Ben non, l'âge n'a rien à voir là-dedans. C'est pour ça que je ne comprends pas trop la comparaison qui suit avec le Seigneur des Anneaux. :)

First off, all fantasy shares some similarities. It is pretty impossible to come up with a completely original story that does not in any way resemble anything that went before. My first editor, Lester del Rey, used to say it was impossible. He also told me at one point not to worry about it. Just tell the story in your own voice and it will be original enough. So you might try not worrying about the elements but concentrating on the storytelling so that your own voice comes through. Also, give some thought to what it is you are interested in saying. Who is your protagonist? What is he like? How should people feel about him? What can you make him do to stand out from other characters? Take time to work through where your story starts, where it goes and where it ends before you start writing. It’s hard work, but it usually helps solve some of those tricky questions about what it is you want to see happen.

Ouais en même temps c'est dur de sortir cash sur une question aussi vague une réponse vraiment pertinente donc ne jetons pas la pierre à Terry Brook.D'un autre coté c'est quand pas avec des conseils comme ça qu'on aura des chef d'œuvres. Si on suit les conseils donnés, il ne faut surtout pas se casser la tête à essayer de faire un truc original vu que c'est impossible de faire un truc totalement original, raisonnement un peu fallacieux quand même. Dire que laisser aller "sa propre voix" suffit à sortir un truc original, c'est un peu démagogique de la part de l'éditeur, à mon avis.Les derniers conseils sont par contre pertinents (c'est du bon sens), même si ils n'ont rien à voir avec la création d'un univers, mais plutôt avec l'écriture des bouquins en eux-même.Après, vouloir créer un truc original à tout prix n'est pas forcément la panacée. Mieux vaut un truc moins original, mais réfléchis plus en profondeur et plus cohérent quoi...

Dans son livre, "Comme par magie. Les Secrets d'écriture d'un best-seller de Fantasy " paru chez Bragelonne, Terry Brooks explique bien les conditions dans lesquelles a été écrit le premier Shannara. Le conseil de Del Rey, de "laisser aller sa propre voix" s'adressait à un auteur dont c'était le premier roman et le but de l'éditeur était franchement de donner (enfin, vendre...) au public un livre "comme le Seigneur des Anneaux". Ca remonte à 76/77 et "L'épée de Shannara" doit être le premier livre de fantasy inspirée par Tolkien (inspiré étant un euphémisme :D ). Avant, c'était plutôt des copies de Conan ou John Carter.

Je doute que je lirai un jour un livre de cette saga mais je tiens juste à signaler que Bragelonne ne publiera plus cette série, ce dont on pouvait se douter ces derniers mois. La série a été rachetée par un autre éditeur. Je ne sais absolument pas lequel et ils n'ont pas communiqué à ce propos. Si quelqu'un veut donner l'information, cela peut toujours être apprécié par les personnes qui s'intéressent à la série.
