Interview de MM par jesépuki (mais je peux retrouver si besoin est)You've recently mentioned in your online forum that an Elric movie is in the works. Can you tell us more?Yes, I’m working with Chris and Paul Weitz. After the success of About A Boy they wanted to do an epic and Chris is an old Elric fan. They came to see me and we hit it off. I just heard Universal want to do the picture, but it’s early days yet.At what stage of the development process are you?Very early discussions between my people and Universal’s people! Can you tell us about the changes to the story that you're making to accommodate the needs of the cinematic medium?Yes, I want the chance to improve the dynamics of the originals, which were written out of order and over a long period. I like movies to be movies and books to be books. I see no point in producing a slavish version of the books. How involved to you hope to be in the story, development, and writing of the film?Quite a bit. The Weitz brothers want me involved and so far we’ve worked very well together on the proposal and so on.What writers would you like to see tackling the screenplay? Any "dream team" picks to direct? We sort of think people will appear when they know the film is about to be made!Who do you see as Elric? Moonglum? Cymoril? Arioch? Yrkoon? The only actor I’d really like to see in the movie is one of my stage favourites, Simon Russell Beale, who did a wonderful (plump) Richard 3 at Stratford a few years ago. He’s a wonderful actor. Good singer, too.If you were to appear in a cameo, who might you imagine yourself as?Smiorgan Baldhead, though I’d have to shave my scalp![Editorial interjection: Since this interview was conducted, Mr. Moorcock has mentioned in his online forum that Jude Law's name had come up in consideration for the role of Elric.]Elric's role in the destruction of Melniboné, I imagine, will make a persuasive case for itself as a potential focus of the tale. Can you mention the saga's highlights that you hope to address in the film, such as this particular event?Yes, the current proposal ends with the destruction of Melniboné as a result of Elric’s decision to accept the dark power of the Black Sword.

Pas en seconde page, j'ai dit!Et pour éviter les remarques de Certain (
), je rajoute ceci :I'm working with the Weitz brothers who produced American Pie. This was a successful version of an old genre but changed the emphasis by making the female characters the bemused superiors. The second movie was not so good (they only produced it) but kept the same theme. About A Boy tends to show the same attitudes. I know from talking to them that they are very keen to have dynamic female characters in the movie and that the people at Universal also like this idea. I have already modified the first movie to give it a strong female character based on Yishana (well it IS Yishana) without altering the rest of the story's dynamic.

As I understand it, the folks who have optioned your movie are also the fellows who did the ABOUT A BOY adaptation, and the AMERICAN PIE films, correct? They have quite an interesting body of work behind them. I wonder what made them go in this direction? They had been saying, since About A Boy came out that they would like to do a really big sf/fantasy movie as ambitious, at least, as The Matrix. They had both read the Elric books and been enthusiasts, so when they learned I was ready to consider doing an Elric movie (which I'd held off doing until the technology was more flexible and could actually be used by a director rather than the director being used by it) they contacted my agent and then came to see me. They also share my views about active female characters and so on (as you'll note even from American Pie) so we were very much in tune. Also I liked them pretty much instantly. In other words, the chemistry was right. I intend to make Elric a success on the big screen and we are both committed to making a highly commercial movie as well as a very ambitious one, keeping the fundamentals of Elric and the books in place. It can be done and I'm pretty sure we can do it. That's one of the reasons I want to rewrite it into a coherent movie trilogy, not losing the original books, but condensing them to their essentials. Some of the best fantasy stories are tragedies, I think, and still work. Look at Lancelot and Guinevere and the Arthurian story. Some of the most enduring movies are effectively tragedies (Citizen Kane, Casablanca, The Third Man spring to mind, not to mention King Kong -- 'it was beauty killed the beast' -- and Frankenstein, even 2001) so it's a matter of HOW you do it, I think. I've given this quite a lot of thought and will give it a lot more, as we all will, before we start filming!

On ne peut pas dire qu'ils se mouillent beaucoup là...on se doute bien qu'ils n'allaient pas dire le contraire...big sf/fantasy movie as ambitious, at least, as The Matrix
Là il y a au moins un adjectif en trop... :? Ambitious, ambitious d'accord mais ça veut dire quoi d'abord?Gros budget? Beaucoup d'effets spéciaux? Une trilogie? Des poursuites sur l'autoroute?... :roll:highly commercial movie as well as a very ambitious one,
Ah...ben voilà ce que je veux entendre!keeping the fundamentals of Elric and the books in place
